2013 - 2014 Monthly Connections

JANUARY MONTHLY CONNECTION

THEME: 1ST ANNUAL RUBE GOLDBURG COMPETION

LOCATION: JANE RUSELL HALL

DATE: JANUARY 11, 2014

 

MSL'ers had a great time particapting in MSL's first annual Rube Goldburg Competion. MSL teamed up with a local business, Tinker Topia, to bring the first annual competion to life. Students had a great time working together and praticing their leadership. Even though it was a competion, everyone won and took home a certificate!

DECEMBER MONTHLY CONNECTION

THEME: ORIGAMI IS THE ART OF MATH

LOCATION: JANE RUSELL HALL

DATE: DECEMBER 14, 2013

 

MSL'ers had a great time learning about the art of Orgiami - which contrast to popular belief comes from China, not Japan. Students had fun learning how to fold cranes and some started on their way to folding 1000 cranes! Students then taught their friends and families how to make them over hot coco and yummy treats.  

 

NOVEMBER MONTHLY CONNECTION

THEME: GLASS MAKING & SCIENCE

LOCATION: TACOMA GLASS MUSEUM

DATE: NOVEMBER 9, 2013

 

MSL'ers had a blast making their own glass tiles, pendents and magnets. Students visited the hot shop and experienced a culture through its glass art work. Students also got a chance to hear a super cool science song about the elements - from the periodic table - and learned about the elements that make up glass.

OCTOBER MONTHLY CONNECTION

THEME: VIDEO GAMES & SCIENCE

LOCATION: DORKY'S VIDEO GAME ARCADE

DATE: OCTOBER 12, 2013

 

MSL'ers had a fun time at Dorky's Arcade in October. Students and staff dressed up for a halloween inspired event. MSL'ers not only had fun playing video games, but they also got to talk with some UW Tacoma students. The college students shared how science plays a big role in video game development! Because everyone knows before you can enjoy a pizza, you have to make it!

 

FEBUARY MONTHLY CONNECTION

THEME: Leadership & Cars

LOCATION: Le May Car Musuem

DATE: Febuary 8, 2014

 

MSL'ers spent their Saturday afternoon learning about the collection in the Le May Car Museuem in Downtown Tacoma. From fuel efficient vehicles to the cars of the future, MSL'ers enjoyed a tour of the museum. Students particapted in multiple leaderhsip activities such as the Pit Crew Challenge and building their own balloon-powered car.

MARCH MONTHLY CONNECTION

THEME: College Hang

LOCATION: Dawg House, UWT Campus

DATE: March8, 2014

 

MSL students spent a rainy Saturday morning on the UWT Campus and got to hang out where all the Huskie students hang. MSL'ers chilled with friends in the Dawg House and played pool, ping pong and even had a little competion on the Wii going. All in all students had a blast just having some free time like college students do. 

APRIL MONTHLY CONNECTION

THEME: College Prep. Night

LOCATION: Dawg House, UWT Campus

DATE: April 23, 2014

 

The time has come for many students to sign up for classes for their next year of school, or it's time for some to get on the graduation wagon and think about what their next steps are. In honour of this, the MSL team put together a College/ Higher Education Prep Night for MSL students and their families. Students and parents had one-on-one time with some cool college admission staff from UWT to talk about what classes should studetns take next year and even some college advice! It was a great night of learn! 

MAY MONTHLY CONNECTION

THEME: Cyanotyping

LOCATION: Dawg House, UWT Campus

DATE: May 17, 2014

At MSL we know our families rock, and when one of the parents spends their time on a saturday afternoon with the students we’re even more pumped to brag about them! MSL’ers learned all about cyanotyping, which is one the oldest forms of photography in history! The students got a quick overview of what cyanotyping was all about before they dawned on some scientist gear and got to work making the solution that when placed on the paper and then allowed to be exposed to the light causing a chemical reaction and changes the color of the paper! The students were overall excited and now some of their art hangs in the MSL  team main headquarters in the Mattress factory!

JUNE MONTHLY CONNECTION

THEME: Relay Games 

LOCATION: Dawg House, UWT Campus

DATE: June 14, 2014

 

MSL'ers & their families enjoyed the last monthly connection of the 2013-2014 school year! What better way to end a wonderful year of success then with a friendly competion! MSL'ers worked as a team in differnt games, cheering on their team mates and friends as they went up against other teams. Parents even joined in for a paper airplane competion at the end! Parents & students are more than excited to begin another summer of MSL!
