The DOs:

  • Use a planner for school

  • Get into after school activities

  • Learn how to drive

  • Try your best

  • Study hard

  • Keep all of your school journals

  • Have a clear, quiet study spot

  • Be yourself

  • Make connections to people in professional fields

  • Get good study habits

  • Have a good sleep schedule

  • Start projects when your get your assignments

  • Be aware of deadlines

  • Take a stand against bullying

  • Know your limits and other people’s limits

  • Know when to stop and give yourself time to calm down from anything stressful

  • Pick a high school you like

  • Keep your options open in school

  • When studying, take periodic breaks of five to ten minutes between long times of study and keep distracting electronics out of reach

  • Keep track of volunteer hours (they are important!)

  • Keep up to date with your work; you won’t be rushing to turn things in later

  • Stay in school; your future is important

  • Be respectful to teachers or adults or your peers

  • Keep your electronic devices away in class; you will have a better chance at passing the class if you are more focused on the material

  • Think for yourself; no one will feed you the answers

  • Be polite

  • People’s belongings are theirs and it is polite to everyone if you

  • Always cite your sources in your papers; they are your papers and yours alone

  • Plagiarism will get you into a lot of trouble; you could even be failed for it, especially in college

  • Cheating is wrong

A good internet tool to start at the beginning of your 9th grade year is Career Cruising. Talk to your school counselor about Career Cruising and to see if your school or district can offer it to students for free.
